Hello and good morning to all. Happy 2016!
After my total disconnection from the holiday break, I’m back on the blog with renewed energy and excitement! Remember I ended last year with lots of projects on my hands? Well, we’re kicking this 2016 with a very special post: it’s all about one of my last projects from 2015, which I shared a little on instagram (perhaps you recognize this exposed brick wall?). Let me introduce you to the new Tikuun, a local restaurant with one of the most exquisite contemporary Mexican cuisine I have ever tried.
Tikuun is located in a beautiful house in one of Guadalajara’s most gorgeous zones, so I had a great starting point. The owners were looking for a vintage style, and had been buying some great pieces. However, something strange happened. The bones were great, but the spaces kept looking empty, lacking personality and warmth. We had to keep the existing furniture and were under budget, so I set to create a cozy, warm atmosphere where clients felt welcome and comfortable, with minimal but important changes. It was like having a dirty diamond. I just had to polish it and let it shine.
So ready for tons of photos? This will be a long post!!!!

That white wall in the entryway was screaming for attention! One of the best decisions we made was to expose the bricks underneath, it brought instant character and warmth. Then we hung the mirror and created a gallery wall with elements I bought thrifting and searching in antique shops. Definitely one of my favorite spots! by the way, you’ll notice a lot of birds in the space. Turns out Tikuun’s logo has a gorgeous, long tailed bird, so we took that element as inspiration and applied it everywhere in different ways.

Right next to it, in the entryway, there was another huge, white wall. I’d like to say, I have nothing against white walls. Actually, I’m pretty much a fan. I love large, white walls in certain spaces, but every project is different, and in this case, we had to do something about them. So I designed another gallery wall, once again with thrifted antique frames and vintage bird illustrations, but gave them a contemporary twist by printing them on white paper. These frames turned out so amazing, I wish I could have kept them all to myself. Here’s a closer look for you.
I shot this last one while hanging them, and it was an Instagram favorite!

Last but not least, the main room. This is one of my favorite changes. So subtle and yet it makes such a huge difference! As you’ve seen, this house has high ceilings, and in the dining salon even more. But I didn’t like the way it looked with white ceiling and that heavy chandeliers. They were nice, but very mid-age looking. It certainly didn’t go with the contemporary feeling from their own dishes and cuisine. So, I had the ceiling painted dark grey, and installed hanging light bulbs all over the place. I love how they look and how they accentuate the height, making it cozier.

On the other wall, another subtle change: we painted in a light blue/grey and hung ceramic flying birds. Aren’t they cute?
